English phonetics textbook is mainly designed as a companion for University non-native speakers of English who wish to understand the principles regulating the use of sounds in spoken language.
The first chapter in this book describes the structure and function of the organs involved in speech production and shows how they work together in the articulation of English sounds. Chapter two introduces learners to the main concerns of phonology and phonetics as two branches of linguistics and how sounds co-articulate together in connected speech. Chapter three highlights features of units that are on a higher level than individual speech sounds, i.e. syllable. It is mainly concerned with syllables in English and describes their structure and patterns. Chapter four focuses on stress as one of the phonological properties of English words. It discusses how stress is first made at the level of individual words, and then moves on to consider sentence stress. Along this book, quick tests are developed to help students check their understanding of previously covered points with some key answers. So they will get a chance to learn and practice with confidence. This textbook ends with a glossary of the main technical terms used in this textbook and those printed in bold.
It is my hope that this book will be of some use to learners of English as a foreign language!
